Recently, I've been working with a healthcare business to build out a much more structured digital operating environment.
On the surface, that might sound like a fairly straightforward technology project.
It isn't.
We're dealing with patient registration, privacy policies, agreements, internal procedures, document management, staff processes, data collection, automation and the systems that connect all of those things together.
The technology is only one part of it.
Before you can automate something, you need to understand how it actually works.
Who does what?
When do they do it?
What information do they need?
Where does that information go?
Who needs to see it?
What happens next?
And perhaps most importantly — what happens when something goes wrong?
Those questions are where digital transformation really happens.
One of the things I enjoy most about this type of work is taking something that previously existed as an informal process and turning it into something structured.
For example, a new patient shouldn't necessarily mean someone manually handing over a form, entering the same information into multiple systems, filing documents somewhere and hoping everything has been completed correctly.
Instead, the process can be designed.
A patient can register digitally.
The appropriate information can be collected.
Privacy requirements and agreements can be presented at the right point in the process.
Documents can be stored consistently.
Staff can see what has been completed.
And the information can flow into the next stage of the operation without somebody having to copy and paste it five times.
None of those individual technologies are particularly revolutionary.
The value comes from connecting them together.
There is also a side of this work that doesn't make for particularly exciting marketing material.
Documentation.
Policies.
Data structures.
Permissions.
Naming conventions.
Workflows.
Process mapping.
Templates.
User roles.
Testing.
Training.
Governance.
But this is the stuff that makes a digital system actually work.
A beautifully designed application sitting on top of a poorly designed process is still a poorly designed operation.
I've increasingly found that the best digital solutions are built by looking at the entire operation rather than starting with the question:
“What software should we buy?”
The better question is:
“How should this business operate, and what technology should support that?”
This is also changing the way I think about what a technology provider should actually be.
For years, the traditional model has been relatively straightforward:
Sell software \u2192 implement software \u2192 hand it over \u2192 move on.
But that doesn't necessarily make sense for modern businesses.
Digital platforms are becoming the infrastructure through which businesses operate. They need to be configured, maintained, improved and adapted as the business changes.
That's why the work I'm doing through Tandem Analytic is increasingly focused on digital operations rather than simply software implementation.
We're helping businesses design and implement the tools, workflows and processes that sit underneath their day-to-day operations — and then continuing to support and improve them.
That means bringing together project management, process design, technology implementation and automation.
I think we're entering an interesting period for businesses.
AI is getting a huge amount of attention, and rightly so. But AI is only going to be as useful as the operational environment around it.
If your information is fragmented, your processes are inconsistent and your systems don't communicate with each other, adding AI isn't going to magically fix the underlying problem.
In many cases, it will simply make a messy process faster.
The real opportunity is to first create a structured digital operating environment — one where information is accessible, processes are defined and repetitive work can be automated.
Then AI becomes significantly more useful.
It can sit on top of a business that actually has something worth automating.
This is ultimately where I'm taking Tandem Analytic.
Not just implementing another piece of software.
Not just building another automation.
And not just providing technical support.
Building the digital operating environment that allows a business to work better.
For a small business, that might mean replacing a collection of spreadsheets and manual processes with a properly connected platform.
For a larger organisation, it might mean managing a complex implementation across multiple teams, systems and stakeholders.
The technology will change.
The platforms will change.
AI will change dramatically.
But the fundamental challenge remains the same:
How do we make the business work better?
That's the part of digital transformation that I find interesting — and increasingly, that's what I'm spending my time doing.
